How to paint wooden flooring

Achieving a beautiful home and high-quality flooring in your home is not difficult. By following these steps, you can ensure that your flooring looks fabulous and lasts a long time. These steps involve selecting the right type of flooring, preparing the surface, installing the flooring correctly, maintaining it regularly, and protecting it from damage. Let's explore each of these steps to obtain fantastic flooring in your home in detail.

What you’ll need:

Paint
Brush
Masking tape
Paint tray
Sander
Roller
Sponge
Vacuum cleaner

1. Sand

If your wooden floor has been varnished, you'll need to lightly sand it to make the surface porous again. There will be a lot of dust, so this is a good time to sand your skirting, as you'll need to paint it after you've coated the floor for optimal effects.

2. Keep the floor clean by vacuuming it.

To eliminate any traces of filth, dust and grease, hoover the floor and wipe down sanded surfaces with degreaser.

3. Tape along the skirting board's edge

Once the surface is dry, use tape to mask the edge of the skirting board that touches the floor.

4. Paint

Give your paint a thorough mix, and if you're using a roller for the first time, lightly cover it with water with a spray bottle. This reduces fluff and allows the roller to absorb more paint.

Brush in along the edges, then paint the entire floor with your roller. Apply two coats and double-check with the can drying times. If the color change is strong, more coats may be required.

5. Skirting

Cover your freshly painted floor and mask off the wall along the skirting board edges after it's absolutely dry. If required, use a sponge to smooth off the sealer along the skirting's edge where it meets the wall.

Then, using a brush, paint two coats of your selected colour and check the can for drying times between applications. Remove the masking tape with care and take a step back to admire your creation!
