Choose a base that is neutral for your living space.

A soft, off-white colour scheme can serve as the ideal backdrop for showcasing your unique accents in every space. According to Willeke Jongejan, Senior Colour Designer of the Global Aesthetic Center, "we call it the poetry of little pleasures." "A new way of living and consuming is emerging; instead of focusing on continuously adding new products, the emphasis is on buying better, less frequently."

Play with finishes to add an extra dimension

Even with this really muted colour scheme, you can experiment with various materials and finishes. Willeke advises "using 'glass and gloss' in the space" when choosing which items to include. Any sparkling objects placed in the room, such as picture frames or glass, will attract attention. Additionally, you can soften the room by adding bits of colour and natural materials to your furniture selection.

Adopt the subtlety of ‘silent design’

"'Silent design' is a good way to describe this understated, discrete approach to the interiors," adds Willeke. "The more time you spend exploring it, the subtle layers of variation emerge from the subtle mixture of textures, finishes, and off-white tones." The harsher aspects of industrial minimalism can be tempered to provide you with an almost blank space that you can fill with your own belongings.

A space to be lived in

Keep in mind that you want to project a feeling of lightness in every meaning of the word. The area should make you feel good and be built to reflect and refract light throughout the space. Therefore, while choosing the mementos to add, think about changing up the surfaces and adding interesting, tactile items to the room to make it more inviting.

Even while you want to include memories and personal experiences into your house, you also want it to feel contemporary, light, and forward-thinking. By including a darker tone, like Denim Drift, the 2017 Colour of the Year, as a subdued focal point on a wall, you can give a room a modern touch.
